The History: The 9th Air Force was activated on April 8, 1942 with its headquarters at New Orleans Army Air Base, Louisiana. Elements of the Air Force arrived in Egypt in June of 1942, It attacked German supply depots while the British fought of Rommel in the Battle of El Alamein. The 9th A.F then supported the English drive across Africa. On December 4th, 1942, B-24 Liberators of the Ninth Air Force made the first American Raid on Italy. On July 19th, 1943 9th Air Force bombers made the first American raid on Rome, Less than 2 weeks later 177 B-24s based in Libya made a low level attack on the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania, The 9th moved to England in October of 1943 and became the tactical air arm of the European Theater. Before Normandy, the 9th provided fighter support to 8th Air Force Bombers and attacked German fortifications along the coast of France. After Normandy, the 9th moved its headquarters to France and provided tactical air support to Allied ground forces. By May 8, 1945, the Ninth Air Force had destroyed 9,497 enemy aircraft and had made over 650,000 sorties
