The History: The North Africa Theater was established on February 4, 1943 with General Eisenhower as its commander. The Theater operated under the directives of the Joint British American Chiefs of Staff with the mission of carrying on operations against the Axis Powers. After North Africa was secured, the Theater continued to carry out operations against Sicily. They lost operational control over the combat units as a result of a command change, but its headquarters moved to Caserta, Italy, By the end of 1944, the fighting had moved to Northern Italy, and the Theater was redesignated as the Mediterranean Theater. It’s headquarters moved to Leghorn, Italy where it remained until the Theater was inactivated in December of 1947
